Why You Should Always Make An Insurance Claim In An Accident
You have an accident on the roads and you wind up running into another motorist.
The damage is minor, so you both agree to repair the dents without going through your insurance company.
If you haven't done that, chances are you know someone who has.
But it may be the worst decision you can make.
Amanda Levine learned that lesson the hard way at Yonge and Eglinton.
"I was coming to a stop at the red lights there and a cabdriver came out from the right to make a U-turn," she remembers. "He went right into the side of my car. He seemed really apologetic. 'I'm so sorry.' He didn't want to go through insurance. He wanted to settle privately."
Amanda complied, getting a $1,000 estimate for the repair, only to discover the other driver was no longer playing ball.
"He told the insurance company I was merging into his lane and I sideswiped him," she relates, a tinge of anger creeping into her voice.
That left Amanda high and dry, because she never told her broker about the accident.
And that's not something you should do, insist experts.
"Unless it's somebody you know that you can absolutely trust, you should report the accident," maintains Brigid Murphy of the Dominion of Canada, a large insurance company.
And don't worry about your rates. If it wasn't your fault, you won't be charged more.

That could also be complete bull.
I have been through certain situations where that never happen. But you never know this could be another bs story to scare people only so you can report even the smallest scratch so they can profit off you some more.

anyways, that lady is an idiot. this is what you do if you get into that kinda situation and want to settle it privately.
-make a written statement in pen obviously, include every detail (if you the one that got hit lol) and confirm it with the other driver. it everyone agrees, sign it and date it, and get witnesses to sign and date it too. it is best to have a camera (even disposable) with you at all times so that in the event of this accident, take pics of all the damage to the other car, and something with time reference. if the other person doesnt play ball and wants to screw you over, take it to the cops/insurance company. you have a statement, so it shouldnt be a problem if it is a reasonable time frame (no more that a week)... happened to my friend. ended up saying screw it and dealing with insurance/cops cause the other guy was a *****

you can also file a minor accident report at the police station asap (very minor report, its to note that this happened, won't involved any tickets/bad records/insurance), and definitely try to bring him along too.

think about it, the police ain't at the scene, so at the station, they're only taking the words of the people filing reports. they can't give you a ticket (the accident report that you file also ain't a ticket), because they didn't catch you/the person who hit you doing it. as for insurance, a ticket does not automatically leads to insurance; you'll have to be convicted, plus the insurance company has to check on your record via the ministry of transportation to know, or you can just tell them. the ministry of transportation will have records of your convictions.. not those minor self reported accidents. the police ain't related to insurance companies, infact its not part of their job to reveal your ticket to them.
btw, you're just reporting the accident and wanting to settle it privately, you're not trying to go to court with the guy
