Everyone Must Buckle Up Under Stricter Ontario Seatbelt Laws
All vehicle passengers must buckle up under tightened seatbelt laws passed by the province Monday.
The new legislation comes two weeks after four people were killed in a horrific crash involving a minivan and a tractor-trailer north of Toronto. The minivan had nine passengers inside but only seven seatbelts.
Under the new law that would not be permitted - and all passengers inside a vehicle would be required to wear the safety device.
When the province first brought in seatbelt legislation 30 years ago the concern was primarily on the driver and front-seat passenger, which resulted in the significant legal loophole.
Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield said it was "ludicrous" and hoped the stricter laws would help save lives.
Following the deadly accident police had called on Premier Dalton McGuinty to make the legal change and he agreed that it had to happen and fast.
A disturbing statistic suggests a third of all Ontario vehicle deaths involve occupants not wearing seatbelts.
Opposition parties said they'd support the change.
