Busted for noise
Ok well hopfully no one will complain im asking this in here, thought this would be the best place, anyways, a while ago some one I know of got in trouble because the cops said his exhaust was too loud, and he got some B.S ticket. Anyways Im planning some exhaust work for the future and was wondering how loud is too loud, whats the leagal limit. Basicly from you guys experiences what will get me pulled over. The engine is a 85 chev 305, and I plan to do true duel exhaust out the back.
Thanks

Personally, I've asked high and low from the police, MTO and MOE. There doesn't seem to be a dB level for "excessive".. it seems to be up to each officer's discretion.
If the law were to have set a definite decibel level for noise, it would open a whole can of worms... SPL meters would have to be used, which includes officer training, regular unit calibration and testing, and of course the debate over A-weighting vs. C-weighting (semantics, I know, but the law isn't anything if not specific).
Of course, this is only what I know. Perhaps gldwngr can chime in on this...

In addition, you can also be ticketed for unnecessary noise under city bylaws. Depending on location in the city and the type of noise, that can happen between 11pm to 7am, or it too can happen at any time of the day.

If you have to ask if your exhaust is "too loud", it probably is. The smart money is to put on a proper exhaust, dual or otherwise makes no difference, with decent mufflers. The world doesn't need to know several blocks in advance that your car is approaching them.
