Road test: 2012 Porsche Cayman R
Just like the Boxster Spyder, Porsche has trimmed weight and added go-faster goodies to a new edition of the Cayman it calls "R". This race-ready version of the mid-engine two-seat coupe is 55 kg lighter, an extra 10 horsepower has been squeezed out of its 3.4-litre Boxster engine and it comes with suspension and aero modifications.
Most of the changes are things that any red-blooded racing buff would probably do, or want to do, in order to gain that extra edge over competitors on a track. Conversely, of course, they also make the street-legal R a noisier and less comfortable road machine. Yes, there's a price for performance, in both occupant creature comforts and in hard cash.
On the money side, the Cayman R costs $4,700 more than a Cayman S. However, Porsche prices, in general, are down about $4,500 compared to 2010 due to the strong Canadian dollar. So today's price for a Cayman R is about the same as what you would have paid for Cayman S in 2010 ... just in case you need a practical reason to justify the purchase.
