So the mechanic said it needs a new oxygen sensor, but you want to do something else instead? Is that what you are saying? The way to fix this problem would be to replace the o2 sensor... there is nothing else you can do instead. You could ignore it until you have to smog it again, but who knows what else would be wrong by them.Sometimes the sensors just go out, just like everything else on the vehicle. The car is 4 years old, sorta new, but it can happen. Just replace it and don't worry about it anymore. It will surely happen again if you own this vehicle for a few more years, maybe not the o2 sensor, but something else like that.I know it's kind of pricey, you could always ask at another shop to see how much they will charge, but it probably wont be much less. If it is, I would watch out for that shop they are probably using a crappy part that you will have to replace again soon. You could check at the dealership too, that might be under warranty, some emission parts are, but I don't know about the o2 sensor.

A faulty O2 sensor would trip a check engine light. If the "emission" lamp you see looks like a muffler-esque symbol with heat lines coming off it, it is your Catayltic converter heat sensor activating. Honda's are notorious for that sensor to go bad, rust off, or the wiring to get pulled out.It is there to let you know the Cat. Converter is malfunctioning (if it is working correctly) Replacing one from the junkyard will do. (If it is that sensor) Not a good idea with o2 sensors.
