You can manually shift in a auto, but unless you can do it pefectly, the difference would be minimal.
Not only that, unless the trans has been built to shift as a manualised auto, it will still shift itself, to a certain degree. What I mean is, if you push the stick forward, it wont shift immediately.Automatic gearboxes change gears with pressure, so the box will still rely on its presets to shift gears.
The main reason car companies have the option of shifting manually is when you are towing, or climbing hills, or travelling at slow speeds, so that you can limit unneeded gear changes.
