Put my bike away for the winter. Should I start it once in a while or no?
Guys,
#1. I'm very confused because I hear mixed things on starting your bike during winter. I read a lot of guides that say to resist the temptation to start your bike up after you've put it away. Everyone else I talk to says that since the lubricated parts are going to be idle for a while I will need to start it up every now and then to relubricate them. Also noting that I will need to cover my exhaust back up so no moisture gets in. Who is right? The bike is in a garage.
#2. I changed my oil maybe a few hundred miles before I put the bike away. Do you think I will need to change it again? Mobil 1 is pretty expensive stuff, I didn't ride it too much. Think i'll be alright?
#3. I heard to take the weight off the tires. I guess to reduce deadspots? I have dunlop tires (190 in the rear) would deadspots apply to these tires, I thought that was a thing of the past? I do have a rear stand but i'm afraid i'll cause more damage by putting more weight on the front tire.

If you had used full synthetic engine oil, then you're OK. I would'nt sweat the engine oil issue at all. I've heard of cars being in storage for years in a barn or garage, they started it years later without changing the oil, and it ran fine.
The moisture going through the exhaust pipe is a fact. The moisture will collect, which turns into a small amount of water getting trapped in the exhaust pipe. People who neglect to plug the exhaust will notice some water shooting out the exhaust the first time they start up a bike.
Taking the weight off the tires is complete rubbish. Wether the bike is on its kickstand or centerstand, makes no difference, will have no detrimental effect on either the front or rear tires.
You neglected to mention 2 things. 1--its advisable to drain the fuel tank. Gasoline, I've heard, undergoes changes in its quality when it sits idle in a holding tank for months. 2--disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. The battery will hold its charge longer if its not hooked into the circuit. On a DC power circuit, a vehicles engine and chassis is part of the electrical circuit.

If you put away with oil in it you should start it periodoicly to keep oil through engine and keep battery up... also to keep a mix in air of gas so it doesn't go bad... if you empty every thing then you shouyld have shop start you for riding season! so any problems arise they can fix right away like sparkplug wire problems and hose if watercooled. and to chang all fluids brakes, oil, transmissions, radiator if req, battery water, and check all bulbs too.
