Does anyone know who the STIG is from Top Gear?

Is it Damon Hill or someone completely unknown? Well, yes he is completely unknown because we don't know who he is! Any ideas?

This question was asked a 'long' time ago. A person claiming to be in 'the know' said the test drivers from all the major car manufacturers took it in turn, to prevent any bias. Sounds plausible to me. I still don't know though.
