'89 Jeep Cherokee
I am going to get a winter beater, and i wanted to get a jeep cherokee '88- '93 or so. but i heard from some ppl that i'd be wasting a lot of money of gas, they said $70-$80 (or more) a week..
is it true? :S

They're hard on gas, but the 4wd ones are almost unstoppable in snow. I watched a stock one go through 16" of snow a few years ago in Sarnia. But with a 4l straight six, they are definitley hard on fuel.

Just got rid of my 91 Cherokee, depending on how much you drive. typical tank full will get you 325 - 350 kms that's a 20Gal tank.
The 4x4 is a nice option though through the winter months.
If you do decide, 91+ are the better years. They have the 4.0L High Output

I have had owned many jeeps and the 4.0L loves gas. My Comanche's was bad, but my 98 Grand Cherokee was the worst. I didn't drive far in it, and only 3 months a year because I hated always putting gas in it lol.
