Transmission Fail-Safe mode
I have a 1999 Accent that my daughter uses. I have had this car for
about 2 years. Every now and then, the transmission will drop into
3rd gear and stay there until your shut off the car and restart it.
At the same time, the check-engine light comes on. I have had it to
the dealer about four times. Twice they found nothing wrong, once
they changed the Pulse Generator, and the last time they changed some
sort of sensor/computer part. Now, of course, it is happening
again!!! Is this signalling a real problem with the tranny, and doing
just what it should to protect from further damage? I made another
appointment, two weeks away, to have it looked at again.
Is anyone aware of any recalls or TSB's for this problem, or has
anyone else experienced this? I'm getting tired of hearing my
daughter say what a peice of junk the car is (she'll enjoy walking if
that keeps up), and running out of miles on the used car coverage.
59,200 mi, not much left. Any help would be appreciated, thanks,
Dan

The transmission goes into the fail-safe mode when it detects a serious fault.
It also stores the error code in the transmission computer.
On the repair order, the technician should make a note of what code has been
set. Do you have the RO copies from the 2 visits?
