I want to put a hitch on my Santa Fe but the dealer wants about $600 for it.
That seems ridiculous. I can get one insalled elsewhere for about $200. Is
there any good reason to get the expensive Hyundai one?

Sure, if you want a genuine oem Hyundai hitch installed by genuine Hyundai
trained employees at a genuine Hyundai service facility.

If a generic hitch installed by generic employees at a generic facility is
ok by you, then you'll save money.

But a word from one who has learned THE HARD WAY..... I'd spend the extra
money....

I look at that a different way all together. Getting a "one size fits
all" one from PepBoys or Walmart and installing it yourself might be
stretching it but any reputable local trailor/truck store in your area
does NOTHING but install hitches on hundreds of cars a year and sale
trailors to pull. The two of so I've used over the years knew the towing
business inside and out and I would not assume they were "generic" by any
means. If in doubt, ask them questions about your potential hitch, what
you plan on pulling, and feedback they have about what you should expect
while pulling that thing with your specific car (trailor and car brakes,
swaying, wind etc.) If they seem clueless or seem unwilling to
offer advice, move on.

The higher price charged by a dealer does not mean you are getting a
better product or better installation.
If the comfort of having a factory installed hitch is worth the extra $400
to you then go for it. I've have no regrets using other methods.

 

Go to a Truck Accessory specialist who installs hundreds of hitches a year
and who really know what they are doing as opposed to the dealer who
probably installs maybe a couple of dozen a year if that. While you are at
it, save yourself about 400.

The hitch is not an OE part; it's U.S.-sourced, port-installed option.
