My girlfriend went to work this morning to find the car (2003 Tiburon
gtv6) shaking hard at anything over 60mph. She took it up to 80mph and
it didn't go away till she went below 60 again. Last night the car
went just fine on the way home. She didn't hit anything like potholes
or small animals, so what would cause this change, literally
overnight, a loose wheel maybe? Out of balance tires?

Well, I spoke with her on the phone and had her take the hubcaps off
and sure enough, one lug on the front tire was almost completely off.
All the others were fine tho. Would one loose lug cause such a
vibration?

Yes it would.
It would through out the dynamic balance (steering wheel shaking).

Turns out that that was exactly what the problem was...Luckily we
caught it before anything bad happened.. She was able to tighten the
lug nut at her work and on the way home, a 60 mile trip, the car felt
fine..

Not trying to be a smart-axx - but some of the first things I
did ( the dealer is SUPPOSED to ) when my SantaFe was
delivered: check ALL the fluids, check the tire air pressure
and check/set the lug nuts with a torque wrench. Your girlfriend
should make sure all the other lug nuts are also tight!

Well, yeah, we should of asked about it, but we *assumed/expected*
they had sold us a properly setup car. Had snows put on and now all
the wheels are torqued up nicely, so we should be ok from here on it,
knock on wood!

Manual states...

Wheel Nut Tightening Torque:
Steel wheel and aluminum alloy wheel (OEMs):
65-80 lb.ft (900-1100 kg. cm.)

Or ~100 newton-meters for those in the old country. =;-)
I shoot for the middle of the range.

I checked at Hyundaiusa.com (shoulda done that first, eh?) and
apparently the wheel torque figures have been changed. The web
site shows the lb/ft. and Nm. figures upped slightly.

I tighten everything to 90 ft/lb. Haven't had anything fall off yet. <G>
