"Thump" sound with rotation
Hello - this is a 1990 Hyundai Excell GL with
an automatic trans and the 1.5 liter engine.
Recently it has developed a thump sound that
corresponds with wheel rotation, but NO
VIBRATION or other symptoms that I can detect
at all.
I've replaced the brake pads on the front
discs, and had the real drums inspected by a
mechanic (brake specialist) who said they're
both ok.
I cannot find any loose bolts or other obvious
problems, visually.
Any ideas or suggestions or similar experience
related in here would be much appreciated.
Otherwise this is one heck of a great little
car that I've had since brand new. All I've
had to do with it is routine, scheduled maint-
enance and never had a serious problem.
Thanks in advance of any help - Pedrito

Flat spot on one tire will do that.

With no vibration? And wouldn't the sound
follow the tire if I moved it (rotated it
to the rear)? I moved the two front straight
to the back, and the two back straight to
the front. The sound remained on the left
front.
Thanks for your response.. I'm beginning to
think that I may have to give in and take my
car to a mechanic (not a whole lot of money
here). :O)

Check the wheel bearings. If they have never been serviced, they're probably in
dire need to be repacked - or in this case replaced.

Just remove the spaces, fix the last part, and so on.

Re: "Thump" sound with rotation
A seperating tread on a tire will do that. CAREFULLY inspect all the
tires for tread coming off. It may just peal off at 70 MPH one day.
Sometimes you can't see the steel belt seperating. Try replacing one
tire at a time with the spare. If one tire makes it stop, that is the
bad tire.

I had that happen to me on a motorcycle, a hand sized chuck came off and
went straight to the ply-belts. Thankfully it didn't blow out. I rode home
at 30mph.

Hyundai bearings are sealed, so no packing. Good idea to check them,
though, although bad bearings give a click, not a thump.
