We have replaced the power window lift mechanism, on our 98 Sonata driver's
window, 3 times in 4 years. Is this unusual? Is this a problem common to this
model? Is there anything we can do to lessen the frequency of this happening?

I also had to have 3 window lift mechanisms replaced on my
99 Sonata in 3 years. 2 of them were under warranty but I
did the last one myself.

On the one I looked at, it seems they use a nylon bushing to
guide and maintain tension on the cable and it isn't up to
the task. It broke and the cable lost its tension and got
tangled up on the reel.

I couldn't see any easy solution to keep this from happening.

The 1998 has a different regulator from the 1999, but I believe both are
susceptible to the same plastic part breaking. Hyundai calls it the upper
holder.

I've not seen any failures of the magnitude described here in the
1995-1998 Sonatas, but have replaced several window regulators over time.

For 1999-2002 models, it appears the upper holder on the replacement part
has been strengthened to help prevent future failures.

 

Since no one responded to my questions on the frequent failure of the power
window lift on our 98 Sonata, I have to assume this is a unique problem to our
vehicle. So, to the next question is: Do any of you know of a cheaper source
for this power window lift. Our local dealer quotes $103.05 for the part, plus
7% sales tax which makes the total over $110.00. Our local salvage yard does
not have one in stock, but they quote $125.00 delivered, in 3-4 days. Surely
there must be a cheaper source since the first of these I purchased from the
dealer was about $80.00.

Actually, on ours, the plastic pully doesn't break, but rather, the
cable cross-winds on the plastic pully; i.e., the cable does not go
into the groves in the pully as it should; instead, it crosses-over the
grooves, causing the window to stick in whatever place the cross-over
occurs. I can't figure-out what causes this to happen, but the cable
always is somewhat "chewed-up" in the process, so maybe the cable
breaks a strand that causes the rest of it to go awry.

Can you, perhaps, shed any light on my later question on this topic?
At present, I've tied the window up with plastic cable-ties and
supported it with a wooden stick wedged under it, but it's kind of
unhandy since the driver's window is used for so many drive-up
activities, so we have to replace the regulator but would like to do it
as cheaply as possible.
