Hi guys and girls,

We've got a '97 Hyundai Excel, and recently its developed an
interesting problem. When we try to change into or out of fifth gear
(ie 4->5 or 5->4) considerable force is required to make the change.
The gear lever will eventually go, and the car runs fine otherwise,
just that it seems to be quite hard to actually effect the change.
There is no problem between any other gears, and the clutch seems to be
working just fine.

Has anyone heard of a problem similar to this, and what might cause it?

Sounds like there's something binding inside the tranny. Does the 1997
Excel compare to anything available in the U.S.? Is it the same as the
1994 Excel or the Accent?

In Australia Hyundai kept the Excel name Through the X series and
didn't change the name to Accent till the LC.
X3 Excel = USA Accent

I thought I remembered some tsb for the Accent, probably not as old as your
car, for some fifth gear issue, but I can't seem to find it. Nonetheless,
if you're paying for repair, it doesn't sound good.
