I lifted the air filter box, and there is anotehr box connected to it that goes
towards the front part of the wheel well in fort of like a funnel. It is held
by a couple of screws. and appears that it can be removed from the top. Isn't
this the resonator box? If not, what is it?

That is normally the air intake which brings air to the filter element.
