The radio in our 2000 Sonata has for some time been turning itself on
seemingly at random. This is the Am/Fm unit with CD player (no
cassette). It otherwise appears to be working OK. Not a big problem,
but it's annoying. Is this a common problem with this unit? Anyone
know how tough it is to fix? (Obviously not worth spending a lot of
time on, aftermarket radios are pretty cheap.)

Yeah, it does seem a little like the "ghost in the machine." :-)

Actually I was thinking that maybe I could get one of the CD/cassette
combo units out of a wrecked Sonata (if I can find one in a junkyard)
and install it. Having just the CD player is a pain since we have a
lot of cassette tapes and only a few CDs. (I've been using the
computer to copy some of the tapes to CD, but it's a time-consuming
chore.) Anyone know how tough it would be to install one of those
combo radios? Is there an external amp that has to come along with the
main unit? Any wiring issues?

 

Our 2002 Sante Fe had the same thing. It would turn itself on & off
when it felt like & as well as blare the sound when you didn't expect
it. So the dealer yanked it & put in a new one & all is great!

Unfortunately, although this car still has the "bumper-to-bumper"
factory warranty from what I understand one of the items *not* covered
is the radio. I'm not going to pay full dealer price to have a new
factory radio installed, so I'll either get one out of a wreck or
install an aftermarket job if it's not feasible to repair the one in
the car.

My '03 Elantra does that every now and then, but usually after hitting
a bump.

Buying a cd/ tape plauyer at best buy might be cheeper, and at least you
know the quality will be better

 

Dealer yanked radio, put in a new one one year into the warranty & we paid -0-!

I had this complaint several times. It's definitely inside the radio. My
personal opinion is that these radios are junk. A factory unit will be
very overpriced new and may not last very long. Used is a much better
option. And, if it's a quality installation, I think aftermarket is the
best option.
