Power Steering Fluid Question
I recently had my entire Transmission replaced in my 2006 Hyundai Sonata
due to a defect. My question is would the Power Steering Fluid have been
replaced as part of the transmission replacement? They are trying to tell
me that my Power Steering Fluid is breaking down and needs to be replaced.

I think you are talking to idiots that are trying to scam you. Ask them
what test they did to tell that the fluid is breaking down. In all my years
of car ownership, I've never replaced power steering fluid in any car and
some have gone 200,000 miles trouble free.
Also, I see no reason to replace steering fluid when the transmission is
replaced. Sort of like getting a haircut because your shoelace broke.

Re: Power Steering Fluid Question
I've disconnected the power steering lines several times when lowering
subframes for transmission replacement, but cannot recall whether this is
advantageous on the '06 Sonata. Check your paperwork from the
transmission replacement. If there's a part number something like
npnsteerfd, then it was replaced.
I don't really think whether it was replaced during transmission
replacement is really the important question, though. How did the shop
determine you fluid was breaking down? What tests did they run to
determine this? Don't be afraid to ask these questions. What you're
likely to find is that the technician sees it hasn't yet been done or that
the fluid is dark in color.
Shops recommend fluid flushes and replacements because they're high profit
items. Service advisors and technicians typically get financial incentives
beyond their typical pay for these items. Check your owner's manual.
You'll see there's no maintenance interval for the power steering fluid.
So unless it's really gross, there's *no* good reason to change it.
I don't think I've recommended this repair even once on any vehicle. I
will say, however, that some older GM vehicles had some steering problems
that fluid flushing will help compensate for or help prevent, so it's not
true that this service is *never* a good idea.

Re: Power Steering Fluid Question
Thanks HyundaiTech. I do not think they did it when I had my transimission
replaced but thought I'd ask if it was a common thing done on those types
of jobs.
As for the breaking down of the fluid, they simply said it was breaking
down no real explanation. I sort of though it was a money maker ploy and
I said that I would look at doing it nex time but now I doubt I will.
Thanks again!!
Incidentally they also said I was gonna need tires soon but they sure look
good to me!!!

Tires do have wear indicators so you can judge for yourself when it is time.
Dealers are in business to make money, happy customers is second.
