Hyundai begins production of new in-house developed six-speed automatic transmission
Following in the footsteps of Toyota and a joint-venture between Ford and General Motors, Hyundai has completed work on its new in-house developed six-speed automatic transmission. The new gearbox will be used in vehicles with transversely-mounted powerplants. Hyundai started development of the new transmission four years ago with reduced emissions in mind. As a [...]

Sounds promising. But it has a tall mountain to climb in terms of
reliability if it wants to compete with the outgoing five-speed. I haven't
met the Hyundai (or Kia) dealer yet who didn't absolutely crow about this
transmission. VERY few problems - very reliable.

Supposidly 6 speed transmissions actually have fewer moving parts then 5
speeds, so thats always a good thing.

It hasn't always been this way. The XG was the first Hyundai/Kia
vehicle with this transmission, and there were several issues in the
first year of production.
Additionally, Hyundai has already been using a Aisin-Warner 6-speed
transmission in the Veracruz. It's basically the same transmission
Toyota has been using with few problems. The Genesis has/will have
two different 6-speed transmissions (actually three, but two differ in
pretty much only gear ratio), but I know little about whether they're
already in use in other products.
