Hyundai 99 surging lights, revs and fan intermittedly
hi, I have a Hyundayi Excel 1999 model, Manual I bought from new.
Last year in october the car shook violently and then died after the
engine light was coming on intermittedly. So my mobile mechanic tested
it said I needed a new Alternator so He put a reconditioned one in.
Car went fine until April 2008 then the car wouldn’t start and I had
to pump the accelerator for a few minutes and then wait 5 to 10
minutes then it would start.INTERMITTEDLY. The moblie mechanic tested
it the computer said no fault as it always restarted eventually. So I
continued to drive it and it was still doing it intermittedly. It felt
also like I had to keep revving the accelerator to stop it from
stalling. Finally I rang Hyundai and booked it in for a check up but
the day before it was to go in. The car died while I was slowing to
stop at the lights. The mobile mechanic came to my rescue and narrowed
it down to a black lead not sure what it was called. Then I drove it
and It kept revving up and bunny hopping. So I took it to Hyundai as
the mechanic suggested an auto electrician. Hyundai replaced another
lead. Car seemed to go fine. Thought I was imaging the dashlights
lighting up more than usual on occasion.
THEN..............................
NOW my problem is that now when I drive to work at 5am in the morning
my car is surging power and My front control panel and my headlights
high beam. And i have noticed also my fan is surging to the next level
of flow. Also It revs up a few seconds after I start it . All of this
is intermittedly and so I took it back to Hyundai and they said they
cant find any problem but suggested I take it back to my mobile
mechanic and test the alternator. So my question is, Can anyone tell me
what is my cars problem it is costing me a fortune.
Regards Deborah

Sounds like bad diodes in the alternator. Your lucky it hasn't burned
out the ECM.

Re: Hyundai 99 surging lights, revs and fan intermittedly
Ditto Michael. If you're experiencing lights dimming and brightenting and
the heater fan speeding up and slowing down (and the engine isn't running
significantly below idle), your alternator is faulty (or has a poor
connection). If it puts out too high a charging voltage, it can kill
every electronic component in the vehicle. Typical deaths are
transmission and engine computers, time and alarm control modules, air
flow sensors, and bulbs. I've seen overcharging alternators cause over
$3000US in damage.
