fluctuating idle speed on Scoupe...
I have a '93 Scoupe. I've recently been experiencing fluctuating idle
speeds. On occasion the idle speed goes up over 2000RPM and I'm
obliged to turn the engine off. I read somewhere that Scoupes of this
age have problems with the intake sensor. Is that the problem here
and what can be done about it?
Thanks
Dave

Yep, sounds like sensor problems.
Unless you have a miss (a cylinder not firing occassionally, and so
polluting the exhaust gas) or dirty air filter, or a ring/valve guide/gasket
problem dumping oil into the exhaust.
If the engine is burning a bit of oil, the perhaps the sensor is just dirty.
If you dont run the car much more than crawling to work and back , then
perhaps a good run can clean the exhaust sensor off.
If the engine runs smooth and clean, then its got to be the sensor , or its
connection to the computer.
If its running rough, it might be a spark plug, lead or ignitition system.
but then you would have said it was running rough, missing and spluttering
and then working up to the high rpm's.

Thanks for responding. Generally the engine runs smoothly, so I
expect it's because I'm tending to do a lot of short trips. I checked
the Air filter and it looked pretty clean to me. Looks like I just
need to keep the exhaust sensor clear.
Thanks again.
