Elantra GT ABS/Traction Control
I was hoping one of the Elanra GT owners could help me out with
something. I'm currently looking for a 2003 GT and wondered how you
can really tell that it has the ABS option added. Is there an actual
button inside that you press to enable the traction control?
Thanks!

I don't know about ABS/TCS for Elantras but I recently purchased a 2003
Sonata LX and it has a button to the left of the steering wheel labeled TCS
to enable/disable the traction control system. As for ABS there should be an
indicator on your dash that lights up when starting the car. I would
recommend checking out your owners manual. There should be something there.

Don't waste your money on the ABS/TC. It is not needed in a vehicle as
small as an Elantra.

Re: Elantra GT ABS/Traction Control
I'm not saying a small car cannot skid or lose traction. The size and
weight of the car are so that ABS and TC are not going to make a difference.
Do a google search on what ABS and TC are, and how they work. Actually most
cars in general do not really need it. It is more meant for Airplanes.

Yes, that would certainly explain why every auto manufacturer offers
it. They all think they're making airplanes!

Thanks Jerry. I was able to snag the exact model I was after and I'm
now the owner of a new Elantra GT!! Unfortunately, I too have to
drive in winter conditions so the extra $$$ for the ABS pacakge is a
comfort to me. Is there ever a time you would want to disable the
traction control?

Those times are rare but basically, any time you _want_ the wheels to
spin when they loose grip, such as when you're stuck in a snowdrift and
are trying to "rock" the car out.

Absolutely--I believe the anti-lock brakes on my Bonneville saved my kids
and
me from a very serious accident when a deer jumped out in front of us while
driving
65 mph on a PA highway at night. The car sustained over $3,000. in damage
from the deer impact
but I never lost control of the vehicle. It was a great relief to brake that
hard,
sustain that impact and still be able to simply pull over to the side of the
road. This outcome
would have been very different in a car without anti-lock brakes. All my
future cars will have
ABS and traction control.
