Hello all,

Our 99 Elantra GL's engine when taking off from a stop is
stuttering for about a second and then goes away; it's also
consistent. At idle the car is fine and shows no signs of a problem.
My sister noticed last week that the check engine light came on but
then went off and hasn't come on again. It's around this time that she
noticed this issue. I checked the ODB connection and the car showed no
errors. The car has 65,600 miles and I have replaced the spark plugs
and wires at 55,000 (last Nov.). The only note to this is I bought the
spark plugs from AutoZone and Bosch platinum plugs. Could the issue be
the spark plug wires? I also added a bottle of fuel injection cleaner
but that didn't do any good. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I would replace spark plug wires.
I think I just read that there are improved factory wire sets that are better
than after market.

NGK wires are a good bet. They're more durable and lower in resistance
than stock wires, but are reasonably priced.

Take the small plastic cover off the top of the engine. Remove the plug
wires off the plugs and place them back onto the plugs but do not clip
into place. Start the engine and gradually pull the wire off. If a wire
is arcing, you can typically cause/see it by looking down the hole while
doing this.

 

Thanks everyone for your help! I took the old wires back to Autozone
(as they have a lifetime warranty) and put in the new ones and the
problem went away. I wouldn't believe that in less than a year they
would start acting up after the Hyundai ones took 4 years (which is
still a short amount of time compared to my Honda/Acura ones which are
the original ones after 10 years). Oh well I'll know what to look for
if they happens again.
