98 Elantra wiith NO REVERSE and SHIFTING HARD
I have a 98 Elantra with the 1.8 engine. The automatic transmission is
giving me some problems. The orginal Transmission had no reverse and
shifted hard between 1st and 2nd then it would loose connection when it
it 25 MPH. I pulled a transmission from a 97 Elantra and it does the
exact same thing. No reverse and shifting hard between 1st and 2nd and
looses connection at 25 MPH. I even changed the Trans. Computer and it
did not help. If I take the O/D off it will shift hard in 1st to
second and then I got it up to 45 MPH in my back road but it does not
shift again. Then I started from a start and hit the gass hard and
when it was in 1st gear it seemed to drop down a gear like it does when
you floor it. CAN IT BE STARTING IN 2ND GEAR? if so what would cause
this or is the trans mission I got bad as well. ANY HELP GREATLY

According to my electrical schematic, the tranmission in the 1997 has two
shift solenoids, one torque converter clutch solenoid, and one pressure
control solenoid, but the 1998 has three shift solenoids, one torque
converter clutch solenoid, and two pressure control solenoids.
It's been awhile since I've looked at one of these electrically, but I'm
curious how you even got the electrical connectors to plug in.
How many terminal holes do you have in the shift solenoid connector on the
harness and how many on the trans connector?

I will count it tomorrow.The transmission is supost to be the same for
the 1.8 on 96 - 98 models. Everything was same. From memory it has
one main wire harness and one sensor on the driver side of the
transmission on the top of the transmission right beside the motor mot
and it runs to a sensor on the driver side facing the front bumber.
Right to the left of it is another sensor. Does this help. in 98 they
have a 1.8 and a 2.0 engine option. Mine is the 1.8 and the 97 was a
1.8. When I looked at the transmission from a accent (96)or 95 it
looks to bolt the same other than the rear motor mount is in a
different position but could be moved to the same location. And the
plate that protects the oil pan that bolts to the botton of the
transmission is not there on the accent. But looks like it would work
as it has the same wire harness and sensor locations. it is on a 1.5
engion. You r thoughts?
