95 Accent HELP! > trapped outa town
hello, I have a 95 Accent, and Im outa town broke down...and I need some
serious help.
Here is the deal, I was on my way here (Trenton) from Toronto, anyhow, car
was fine. Then I started losing power to the battery. I figured it was just
the ALT. So I bough a bran new one. replaced it.
5 mins down the road, I blew a fuse. I saw the flash of light behind the
dash. Then back to the way it was again.
When I looked wha blew. The 60amp alt fuse went, heater, radio, anll
interior stuff died. Now I sit here lost, not knowing what to fix, what to
try, what to do.
I thought of the voltage regulator, but I don't know if this car has one.
I thought too that maybe I blew the new alt aswell.
Can soeone give me any ideas what to try, look for, do. Im stuch here
untill the car is fixed. I would take it to a garage, but Im short on
funds. I use to work on cars at a garage, so I do know a bit. Any info is
greatly needed.

Sounds like the replacement alternator had a bad diode and let high voltage
fry your system. I had something similar happen to a '94 Scoupe. It took
out a couple of fuseable links and the ECM.
Sorry but your screwed.

Re: 95 Accent HELP! > trapped outa town
Like the other poser said, the diode is one possibility. Other than that I
would look for a short to ground on the positive battery cable. to pop a 60
amp fuse is pretty good amount of juice and you have to look to a high amp
source.
Good Luck

Re: 95 Accent HELP! > trapped outa town
Definitely sounds like an alternator overvoltage issue. A flash of light
behind the dash? What happened back there? The 60A is under the hood.
If you had an overvoltage issue, do not run the car with the alternator
plugged in. It will destroy bulbs and every electronic device in the car.
Replace the alternator and fuse, and hopefully, your car still runs.

Re: 95 Accent HELP! > trapped outa town
well thank you all for your replys. Im still here outa town, but Im happy
to say Im going home tomorrow. I guess some of you are curious about my
progress here.
Well, I ende up having to get another ATL. I put it in, hooked it up, and
replaced all the fuses, and prayed for the best. Well it fired up and the
charging system was working. Everything seemed ok. I did however blow up
my rear window defogger button. Im thinking that was the flash I saw
maybe. I totally disconneted it, so no worries their now.
Now when I got it running, I took it for a drive, and it seems when I hit
a bump, I get a power serge or something. The lights go brighter, heater
fan higher. It only last for a split second. So, Im like, ok, their is
something shorting out here. I start thinking or where power goes, and if
anything along that was doesn't work right.
Well the only thing I can come up with is the starter. Only because
sometimes it turns the motor over normal, sometimes slow, sometimes click
click click, sometimes spinnnn, and something nothing...lol So the only
thing I can come up with, is their is a short in the starter. Would make
sence too and the poster said to check the postive wire to the starter.
So now tomorrow Im getting another starter put in. Not a easy part to get
in a small town...lol
You think this woould make sence to change??

Re: 95 Accent HELP! > trapped outa town
Sounds to me like these alternators aren't very good. What's probably
happening is that something inside the alternator jostles and causes a
voltage spike. If you don't have a Hyundai reman, I'd recommend taking
your car in and getting one. Have the dealer install it. It'll cost
more, but you'll have the insurance that if it fails within the warranty
period and takes out half your car, that they'll replace the alternator
AND repair any damage it caused. I don't know of any aftermarket company
which will cover consequential damage.

Cheap rebuilt alternators are notorious for being bad. My son and I
replaced the alternator 4 times in his GMC Yukon before buying a name
brand rebuilt which works fine. I agree with hyundaitech, buy a Hyundai
unit.
