I just bought a 2003 Elantra and discovered that the air-conditioning
comes on automatically whenever you switch the air-flow controls to
defogger mode. It is designed to do this.

However, I find this feature incredibly stupid and extremely annoying,
as I would like to drive with the defogger on all the time (it's a
necessity where I live), but this means that the a/c will be on all the
time, including wintertime. Besides the obvious problems of wear and
tear this will cause, the a/c severely dries out the air in the cabin,
making my eyes, nose and throat sore and making it hard to breathe.

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable this feature? I might
even consider disonnecting the a/c altogether if that's doable, as I
only need a/c a few days out of the year where I live. Had I known
about this when I was looking at the car, I wouldn't have bought it.

All cars made in the last 15 years or so turn on the A/C with the
defrost. I don't know of any way to defeat it short of just removing
the A/C fuse. By the way, Defrost without A/C is usless. It's not heat
that clears the windows, it's the A/C.

the reason being is that the coolant is also the lubricant, if you turn it
off all of the seals will dry up and you will lose the coolant.

I found this feature annoying too. On my car it is possible to switch AC off
after you start the engine. The problem is that I often forget to switch it
off. It would be nice to have some acoustic signal when AC is first turned
on.

The easiest thing for the OP to do is push in the little AC button whenever
they switch to defogger mode.

I agree, the accoustic signal would be nice. However, I don't have a problem
with A/C and the defogger, since the A/C does help with the defogging.

I typically just hit the A/C button after a few minutes, or turn to a
different nozzle setting.

I don't think you have much of an option. Even if you were to switch it off
and then put it on regular vents then switch it back to the Defog...the
system will automatically switch it to Fresh Air and activate the A/C to
take the moisture away. Wouldn't want that hot steamy mist inside fogging
the windows.
