2002 Hyundai Accent GL - Check Engine Light and Sudden Gas Pumping Issues
Hi everyone.
I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent GL with close to 60,000 miles on it and my
check engine light came on recently. I had the code read (P0440; if my
memory serves) and purged as I figured it was just the all too common lose
gas cap.
The light came back on a week later and when I went to put gas in the car,
the gas pump continually kept stopping as if the tank was full. I tried it
elsewhere and received the same result. It took forever too fill it up.
Does anyone have an idea as to what exactly is causing this?
Is it something that can I fix it myself fairly cheaply, and if not does
anyone have an estimate as to how much it would probably cost if i brought
the car to a regular mechanic or even a local Hyundai dealership (the car
is off warranty)?
Thanks for your time.

Re: 2002 Hyundai Accent GL - Check Engine Light and Sudden Gas Pumpi
It'll probably take significant diagnosis to sort out the issue for sure.
The fact that you have an evaporative emissions code and that the fuel
tank is hard to fill pretty much indicates that there's a blockage in the
system that vents through the charcoal canister. The most common issues
are with the canister filter and the canister itself, but it could be just
about anywhere between the fuel tank and atmosphere.
