2001 Hyundai Sonata 4cyl auto trans
After a few of my friends had purchased Hyundai vehicles I figured why not
give it a shot. They are nice looking cars and are fairly inexpensive. I
did not buy my car new, but used with 23,700. Long story short within a
week of buyng the car I realized that the transmission fluid was low. Thats
funny because the car had been looked over by the dealer (150 points of
light quality inspection) and I had examined the car before I purchased it.
So I added almost 1 quart of tran fluid and she was back to normal. About
the same time I noticed that the car when downshifting (especially with AC
on) was rough and seems to clunk down each gear. Is this normal? I took it
to the shop and they checked it out and found that a fuel injector was dirty
(not sure what that had to do with the transmission) . This did not affect
my transmission but did make the car idle smoother. Like I promised long
story short......I would like to know if any other Hyundai Sanata owners
experience the same problems:
If I horse the engine trying to get through town, when I stop at a light
the engine goes way down to 600 rpm and shakes the car, then returns to
normal idle.
Idle fluctuates when in park or in drive..... sometimes will idle at 1100
rpm..sometimes 800 rpm
Somedays I can drive the car and it performs beutifully (shifts smoooth,
does not hesitate on takeoff)
Other days the car feels like I am towing a boat, and I am the only one in
the car.
Sometimes when accelerating the transmission will act like it wants to shift
and then nope ...stays in same gear and hesitates then shifts.........(WTF
is going on?)
One thing I can say.....if I baby the car and wait for it to go from 0-50 in
about 25 secs the car shifts fine...it seems...
This is just the top of the list of issues with this car that drives me nuts
every day. My friend just bought a Nissan Sentra and that car is smooth
shifting....has plenty of acceleration without hogging on the pedel......and
is a 4cyl auto trans as well.
Please tell me I am not the only person that has these issues with their
Sonata.........
Thanks

Mine was doing this, and then a few weeks later a Spark plug lead failed.
That could be your problem..

Mine does that too, it happens when the air conditioner turns on.

How did you measure the fluid level? Did you follow the instructions in the
owner's manual?
