2000 Accent- Stalling and Bucking
I have a 2000 Accent Hatchback. It started Bucking once in a while at
HWY speeds. The check engine light would come on for 3 or 4 secs, and
then go off. This kept getting worse, to the point where the car
stalled and would not start for 20 minutes.
My mech said that no code was stored, and that when the car won't
start, there is no spark. We changed the crank censor, but it's still
doing it. we checked all major connections as well as the relay for
the ecm, but nothing. He thinks the next step is to change the ECM.
Does anybody have any advice?

Don't forget to take a look at the high voltage coil. I had a similar
problem on my 96 Accent a few years back. The coil casing was cracked.
Replaced it and the car now has 187,600 miles on it. Good luck.

Re: 2000 Accent- Stalling and Bucking
Sounds more like a power issue to the ECM. If the ECM loses ignition power
and then it's restored, then the lamp will come on for a few seconds just
like when you start the car. I've also seen this occur on an older car
when the positive battery terminal was shorting against the battery hold
down, causing system voltage to momentarily go to zero.
You'll want to check the ignition switch, the engine control relay and PCM
ground. Probably you won't find anything given the intermittent nature of
the problem. If not, I'd replace the engine control relay. The condition
you describe is consistent with the relay going open when it gets hot and
is an inexpensive repair. That way, even if it doesn't fix the problem,
you haven't spent that much money.
