Took in an 02 elantra for recall service this morn'. Tech mentioned
belt inspection/replacement for autos @ 60K miles. Then said
it'll cost $530!. Is this the norm?

You should change the timing belt @60K miles.

It's much cheaper to do it yourself.

If your car is closing in on 60K miles, you're much better off paying
the $500+ getting the timing belt replaced BEFORE it goes bad. Believe
me!

I don't know the details, but we had an old minivan awhile ago in which
the belt went south (at 48K), and it did all kinds of nasty things,
including bending valve stems, if I recall. Luckily it was JUST under
the 50K warranty, otherwise we would've been out about $1200+ for the
repair...

Yea, my wife had a '79 Fiat Strada that had it's timing belt jump at 28,000
miles. Massive damage but it was under warranty.

£180 here in UK (including tax) = about US$320 for belt change.

The local ford dealership did mine for 3.5 hours labour.
I shopped around, the highest was 5 hours labour.
I bought the belt myself. They did the labour.
No problems. Did mine at 100,000km.
