1992 Honda Prelude Auto Transmission Problem ?
I have a 1992 Honda Prelude I bought used 6 months ago. It now has 160k on it. After the car heats up (approx. 15 or so highway miles) the speedometer will cut off and the engine will rev when in like it is neutral. But if I drop it into 2nd, I will have a gear, but none in D4 or D3.
Stop the car and it will start up but do the same thing a few feet later. Let the car sit for awhile and everythings fine until it heats up. Is this electrical or possibly my trans fluid is worn out? The fluid is a very light color (I dont think this should be right since I have put significant miles on it since getting the car). Thanks in advance. I really don't want to get hosed by a shady mechanic who wants to sell me on a rebuilt tranny. Occasipally if it does this it will suddenly work again for a breif moment also. Weird problem.

Sounds like it is a transmission problem, but usually if you don't have a gear then you don't have that gear for good. Not likey that the gear will come back after letting the car sit unless for some reason after it warms up the solenoids or clutches start getting stuck. So sounds a little weird to me, if you didn't have D4 or D3 all of the time that would surely be because those gears are shot. But in this case it's kinda hard to say, but it still sounds like a transmission problem. Sorry, it get hard to diagnose a vehicle over the internet.
