I have no idea where you got that figure from. I'm on my 3rd Acura
and I've never paid anywhere near $300 for an oil change. For
instance, the last oil change (at my Acura dealer) I got on my RL
was $36. It included the normal visual inspections, a wash,
interior vacuum and an alignment (toe-in) check.

 

Having recentley faced the same decision myself, I ended up choosing a
new Honda Accord Euro (Acura TSX) here in Australia over a new Lexus
IS250.

While I enjoyed driving both, the Lexus was just a little bit too
expensive and I could get similar features in the Accord Euro (TSX)
without having to pay an extra federal 'Luxury car tax', so I went with
the Honda/Acura.

I'm sure we can recite anecdotal experiences with just about any auto
dealership and I have little doubt that your friend may have suffered
through a couple of $300 oil changes that were change-ups to a hefty
service bill.

OTOH, one can walk into just about any Jiffy Lube in the country and if
you're a gullible moron, walk out with a change of oil, transmission
flush, some new filters and wiper blades and have your wallet $125 or
better lighter.

Does that guarantee that the same will happen to you? Nope, only if you
too are a gullible moron.

An informed consumer is an informed consumer. Perhaps it's just that a
higher proportion of those folks driving luxury cars don't know all that
much about the inner workings and are ripe for the picking.

OTOH, I have a friend in Texas who recently took delivery of a brand
new, specially ordered (color combo) Lexus. When he took it in for the
first oil change and break-in check, they gave him the same model car as
a loaner. Car had about 500 miles on it AND it had the exact set of
wheels on it that he'd been told were unavailable when he bought his.
He commented on this to the Service Writer. Service Writer excused
himself and asked Dee to stand by. Came back with the GM in about ten
minutes and asked him if he really wanted those wheels and had 45
minutes to spare. He did and he did. He drove out of the dealership
with the exact wheels he wanted with his own tires mounted and
rebalanced - NO CHARGE!

Soooo... Will it happen to me or you if we go to that dealership or
another one? Maybe, maybe not. But I'll be damned if I'll forgo
driving the car I want because of one or two half-cocked general bitches
about a manufacturer's dealers. Especially when it's based upon the
ALLEGED misdeeds of ANOTHER manufacturer's dealerships.

That makes about as much sense as saying "I'm NEVER going to travel to
Bermuda because a friend was treated so shabbily when he went to Sweden!"

You should see what some Lexus dealers are soaking their customers for
for simple oil changes.
