Ok, I'm a recent convert from American to Foreign (long time Fix Or
Repair Daily owner). I bought a 2000 Honda Civic VP with 69k miles on
it. My girlfriend thinks I'm dumb for buying a car with that high
mileage.

Does anyone here have a high mileage Honda with no major repairs, i.e.
no engine rebuilds, no new trannys, just standard maintenance, the
standard 'repair / replace items (i.e. brakes, spark plugs, major mile
service)? Anyone with over 150k miles? 200? 300?

Got an 89 Civic Hatch DX with 168,000 miles with nothing major repaired.
Also have an 86 Hatch with 128,000 miles and nothing major repaired (I got
that one used for $400 though and it smokes pretty bad; been driving it 1
1/2 years though with no problems). I wouldn't worry about high mileage on
a Honda that's been properly maintained till after 200,000 miles. Of course
if you're not certain of the history, then anything's possible.

I work with 2 people that have a civic with high millage.

one is a 1999 Civic HB with 300,000 KM with only oil changes and breaks
done. Still going strong.. he drives 4600km per month for work.
the other is/was a 1996 Civic Coupe Si with 450,000KM.... but not sure what
was done... I know the clutch and trans didn't have any work other then
Trans fluid. Altho this car has since lost compression on one cylinder and
he swaped the engine for an 2000 SiR engine with 60,000km on it.

153+k miles 1991 Honda Civic LX manual transmission here. No major engine work.
Original clutch and no problems with the transmission. Got taken for a ride on
various distributor-related problems over the years, though, until I wised up
and found out I was smarter (at least about my car) than the yahoos at the
dealer's and Firestone. (Um, I should add that the smarts come from help now and
then from people here at the newsgroup.) But even the distributor-related
problems haven't added up to more than about $1000 over the life of the car, and
most of that $1000 can be argued to be expected maintenance.

From my reading here, 69k miles is definitely fine for a Civic, assuming you got
a price that reflected the mileage. Should give you at least 100k, and maybe
even 200k+, miles more of decent service.

We've got an 88 Prelude SI 4WS with 172k. We follow the severe maintenance
schedule religiously (on all our cars). I also had an 87 CRX (bought new)
and put 75k on it in 2 years. I currently have an 99 Accord EX with 90k
other than the catalytic converter being replaced under the CAT warranty
It's been trouble free as well. I've owned 7 Honda's the 1st being a 1977
Civic CVCC and all went over 100k it NO problems. Honda is the only car I
would consider buying used with

My 94 Accord has 130000 miles on it and still runs fine. No major problems
other than rattling heat shields and replacement of damaged cv joints which
really isn't a big deal for a ten year old car.

My wife has a 1999 Accord with 115k and my daughter has a 2000 Civic EX
with 105k

 

FWIW---got a '92 Acura Integra (RS, I think---it's got a Honda 1.8L
non-VTEC), bought in '99 w/114K mi., has ~145k on it now. Don't be scared,
but here's my list:
Only recently replaced front axles, new front tie-rods (2 weeks ago),
distributor, oil changes on the 3k, new radiator, new front rotors, brake
pads (when they need 'em), aftermarket short-ram intake, new (cheap) ECU
(supposed to add performance), new condensor for R-12 a/c (was going to
retro-fit it to R-134a, but chose not to at the time. maybe later).
Waiting for cat-back stainless exhaust kit. Will install performance headers
& pullies sometime. Sooner or later I'll need a valve job, or just an
engine-swap w/another B18 engine or something. I don't ever want to sell it.
She's been real good to me. Good gas milage. Honda engines are great.

Oh----& replaced idler pulley (that thing was stuck---a mechanic of mine
pulled the belt that drove it off until I got it fixed with the complete a/c
repair), & replaced timing belt shortly after I bought it in '99, ~120K. I
dunno if & when the previous owner changed it. Timing belt is very
important to change.

one of my friends has an accord with 360k miles on it. daily driver.
runs like a champ. original engine & transmission. replaced brakes &
drive shafts, but that's what you would expect for front wheel drive.

Well, I'm a recent convert too. Bought a 2000 Civic DX 77,000 miles now has
88,000 all I can say is, I'm impressed - I had it tuned, changed all fluids
at time of purchase and it runs great. During winter months I swap out the
tires with Blizzaks. I expect it to last quite a while. BTY, I paid
$8,2000 for it.

2000 Civic VP. 69k miles. day after I got it, noticed a rip in the
bumper, the rear view mirror was loose, the headlights were gunked up
from the inside, and the steering column was 'loose' - just the cover,
not the column. Told my sales guy about them - no prob, we'll set up a
time to fix it. Next day, the car sputters and hesitates, and then the
Check Engine light comes on. I was around the corner from the dealer,
and took it in. That was last Thursday night, should have it tomorrow.

No charge for anything - rental and all.

Honda is AWESOME.

with 275k and more.

I have spent $5,683.00 on my '92 Accord in various parts and tires over
the 215,000 miles I have on it. That's about two and a half cents (U.S.)
per mile. No major engine or trans or suspension work. Gas cost over
the same period is about .0353/mi. bob

 

2001 Accord EX-V6, 110k, EGR Ports cleaned under warranty. Bought new,
wife's car
1996 Accord LX, 145k, Nothing other than regular maintenance.Bought new,
son's car
1994 Civic, 75k, blew a head gasket a few weeks ago, $800 repair. Bought
used with 73k, #2 son's car
1991 Accord LX 167K, Front Axles replaced, EGR Ports Cleaned, Rotors
changed. Bought used with 120k, My car (okay, I have a Tundra also)

The '91 is our "Spare" car. Cheap insurance, and if anyone in the family
has a car in the shop, it's a Godsend. Son wrinkled the Rt. front fender a
couple of years ago, but it's still going strong. Wife wanted to sell it
last year, but boy has it come in handy. Cheaper for me than running the
Tundra around with the price of gas.

You may need axles soon (that was always my civic problem), but if you are
comfortable it was maintained (records, not someone's word), then you are
probably good.
