I was looking for a little more than "In addition, some viscosity grades
exceed specific OEM standards."
Exceed specific OEM standards. Hmmm, which ones do and which ones don't.
I don't see any wear tests, fleet testing results, anything that would lead
me to believe its any better than anyone elses standard let alone synthetic
oil.
Sorry, I don't follow blindly.

No problem. I just use it for it's low temp flow, mostly.
And for that info, you'll actually have *look*... yourself.
TTFN!
BTW, what response has Mobil given you to your specific technical questions?

ILSAC ratings really are not very specific, agreed. The ACEA ratings are
an entirely different kettle of fish. There are not a lot of dino oils
on the American market that meet ACEA A3.

Ok, let's be fair: do they also handle Mobil 1? If so, maybe their
answer is worth consideration, but if not, it's questionable. Why one
brand? Why not the other brand? This thread hasn't shown me much to
convince me one's better than the other.
People talk about test results. Well, there's only one thing you're
gonna know about test results regarding motor oil: if it says it meets
API SL specs (or any other testing sequence), the ONLY thing you know
for certain is the minimum quality of the oil. Actual hard data on how
much it exceeds spec is info you'll probably get right after the Coca
Cola people give you their recipe.

Re: Royal Purple or Mobil1 Synthetic
For me, it's not an issue of which one is better -- Mobil 1, Royal
Purple, Amsoil -- nor was I trying to enter that argument or convince
anyone of anything.
For me, Mobil 1 is "quite good enough" and I'll be staying with it.

I found more performance and wear tests on Royal Purple than Mobil 1. Also
was told it was real big in the RSX crowd because it's a lot easier on there
apex seals. From what I can see with the information I found is that Mobil1
performs very little better than regular oil. Also I've used Mobil1 for 5
years.
When I went into the store, I went there to buy Royal Purple. What they said
about it just cinched it. Else I would have gone to WalMart to buy Mobil1
along with a tub of OxyClean.
What technical data do you use to justify Mobil1 over Royal Purple?
Something more than, "Its what everyone else is using."? The only thing you
could give me on Mobil1 is a few specs from there web site. Specs that can
met using regular oil.
I don't need to justify what oil I use to you or anyone else. This is my

Thank you for repeating what I already wrote. Do you suppose one of the
reasons mfrs don't post much info is the poor reading comprehension of
the general public? Much easier to tell them nothing than have it
misinterpreted. Please tell me what ACEA or a mfr's spec tells me? Other
than the oil meets the ~minimum~ requirements for that testing sequence?

Exactly! Do you like blondes, brunettes or redheads? Unless one has a
lab to test these different products under identical conditions to
determine which one is "best," it's just personal preference and
anecdotal stories. What works well in my engine is the one that I
~think~ works well based on the limited parameters I can measure: oil
pressure, oil consumption, fuel economy, the odometer, operating cost. I
haven't a clue what kind of wear is going on inside my engine until I
tear it down and measure it. But since my engine's got 336k miles, I
think it's safe to assume whatever I've been using works--for me. This
is purely YMMV territory!
