Re: 99 Civic A-Pipe Problem-Warranty?
Took my car to the dealer on Tuesday. They called me back and said it
was the heat shield. I said I do not think it is the case. They said
they were pretty sure it was, and offered to take it out for free. I
OK'd it. Guess what. The problem did not go away, it had nothing to
do with the heat shield.
Went back there again today, I asked a tech to come out and look at it
himself. He said it has got to be the gasket between the A-pipe and
the cat, and it took him only 10 seconds to say that. They wanted to
charge me for it, but when I brought up the fact that I had '4'
complaints, 2 of them during warranty, they decided to take care of it
for free. I should have the car tomorrow, I'll let you know if they
could fix it.
What kills me is that they did not even look at it when I brought it
in the first time (which does not surprise me). It should have been
diagnosed right the first time.

And that is a typical modern dealer response to warranty
repair, any dealer. They make a huge %age of their income
from non-warranty service and selling used cars. So, as in your
case, they eat it to make you happy if they can't make the claim
from the manufactorer. A few years ago when Ford Taurus
engines and trannys where failing at an alarming rate, dealers
were gladly dropping new units in, boxing the faulty to return
to FORD. Remember, you bought your car from a "dealer"
of cars, they don't represent them in the classic sense of
retailing.
Since your car is relatively new, take it in the form of a
letter to the regional head office if this costs you anything
out of pocket. I did the same a few years ago and was
reimbursed fully.

I got my car back today. It is fixed, and they did not charge me for
it. Fine by me...
