new sound developed in my engine compartment
i have a new sound that developed in my engine comparment within the past 3
days... it kind of sounds like a grinding sound but its not its more like a
hevy vibration sound... i can feel it in the shifter when it happens and it
only comes into play in first and second gears after that the car runs
normal and has no problems at all.. any ideas?

If what you're hearing is a metallic rattle that is louder when the car is
under load you may have a loose heatshield on your exhaust, this is very
common and easy to fix. get underneath the car and bang on the exhaust, if
you hear the rattle doing this, check for a spot where the weld on the
heatshield may have popped or rusted through. you can fix it by applying a
hose clamp to secure the shield to the exhaust pipe. The most common
sections of the exhaust for this to happen are the a-pipe and the catalyst.
Hope this helps.

Re: new sound developed in my engine compartment
it is a sound that occurs when the car is under load but the heatshield for
the exhaust was removed and replaced with a new cat last
summer.....................it sounds as if it is coming from the
transmission.... when the car is in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears now......
but in 5th it makes just the normal sound.. it sounds as if there is no
tranny fluid in the trans at all its a manual transmission and i think what
i am going to do is put it up on the lift tomorrow and chekc it out but im
no mechanic so i cannot be for sure... any other suggestions?
