Lug Nut Type for Honda Civic
My 1998 Honda Civic EX Sedan has 208,000 miles on it.
During a recent visit to "Discount Tire" to have my tires rotated, I was
told that the lugs nuts that I had were "taped seat nuts". They told me
that the appropriate type for Hondas and Acuras are "ball seat nuts".
I have had those for a long time. Does it make a difference, for safety
concerns and such?

I think you mean "tapered", not "taped".
Using the wrong type of nut can result in the nuts loosening over time,
which is bad news indeed.
The type of nut you use is dependent on the kind of wheels you have. If you
have aftermarket wheels, tapered seats may well be correct for those
wheels. If you're using OEM wheels, you should be using the OEM nuts.
Where did these nuts come from? Are they and the wheels original to the
car?

Re: Lug Nut Type for Honda Civic
Yes, Tegger...I meant "tapered seat". Mistyped.
When I bought the car, it did indeed have aftermarket rims. This was
1998. In 2003, I bought some actual Honda rims (for the 98 Civic in fact)
from the dealer, but apparently the same lug nuts stayed on.
Later the Discount Tire people told me of this. They said that I will be
called when the "ball seat lug nuts" shipment arrives.
Hopefully, I'll be safe.

You may get a better deal on used lug nuts at a local wreckers. They have
scads of them and will probably sell you the required amount for a few
dollars.

The nut seats on the wheels may be damaged. I've seen them distorted
inwards at the lips of the nut holes so that the wheel will not sit flush
on the hub, in which case the wheels may eventually work loose. Check
carefully.
