Help! Engine cutting out randomly.
Hey all,
Thanks in advance for any help from ya'll. My 89 Civic Hatch is
suddenly not running so well. This is a little difficult to explain, but
here's a try. I'm driving along, and at seemingly random times, the engine
seems to just not fire for a cycle. Something like this has happened
before. About 99K miles back the fuel injectors were starting to go bad
(mechanic said the resistence was out of range). It would do something like
not firing for 1 cycle and then pick right back up again like nothing
happened & the "check engine" light would come on. This time, it feels sort
of the same. It feels like the engine is cutting out for a cycle or two,
but this time, the "check engine" light doesn't come on. Additionally,
today, it cut out, cut in, and cut out completly leaving me to coast to the
nearest parking lot. The "oil" light was on. After waiting about 30
seconds, I attempted to fire it up for about 5 seconds and it didn't start.
Then waited about 10 seconds and tried again. This time it started the
moment the engine turned over. It ran fine the rest of the way home (3
miles). I'm at 170K miles & I'm not burning any oil. I've got a bearing I
think (AC, alternator, water pump, something) that makes a terrible
screaming sound about once every 5K miles. It's done that about 3 times now
but it stops after 10 or 20 seconds and I won't hear it again for months. I
recently hit a brick doing 70mph that punched a hole in my automatic
transmission. A little marine tec putty later and fresh transmission fluid,
& I'm seeminly doing fine. The brick also reduced my fuel tack size from
11.2 gallons to 9.8 gallons. Thanks for any suggestions. Let me know if
there's any other info that might help.
