Civic misses under load
Hi Guys,
I have an '80 Civic 1300 DX Manual 5-speed with under 50,000 miles. When
driving at a low speed and accelerating, the car starts missing and bucking
badly. I've checked mostly everything imaginable -- so many vacuum lines
and solenoids! Since the carburetor has been rebuilt and adjusted
(including the float levels), I suspected a leak in one of the vacuum lines.
But they seem OK. I checked the advance, both vacuum and mechanical and the
spark advances when speeding up the engine.
Any suggestions?

You should check your maint. schedule. If you have not had a tune-up in
over two years, you should visit a Honda dealership or mechanic that you
trust and have them do a tune-up. Tell the mechanic about your specific
problems. The mechanic will hook your Civic up to a computerized tester
and should be able to determine the source of the problem.

The recent carburetor work makes me suspicious that there could be a problem
with the rebuild. However, assuming (and it's a big assumption) that the
carburetor is ok, then I would look into a possible ignition problem. For
example, a common problem is with the ignition wires which need to be replaced
at about 100,000 mi. Another common problem is that the spark plugs become oil
fouled due to leaking cvcc valves (which could cause a misfire under load).

I had an '80 Civic 1500 DX Manual 5-speed with 250,000 miles on it and was still
running strong, no oil burn, but the sheet metal for the top of the struts
rusted away, so before it fell down to the ground I gave it to a buddy and he
used the engine and tranny in another one.
Anways, Moving on:
Too low RPM, Too high of gear selected or lugging, Too low octane, Too
advanced ignition, ignition vacuum advance plugged to wrong carb port. Carb too
lean: Low fuel level, jets too small, bad accelerator pump, missing hoses...
Any of these will cause lean burning thus missing, spitting and bucking

Off the lean burn subject: Bad plugs, bad ignition wires, bad distributor cap.
Any of these will cause missing, spitting and "bucking"
Most likely: bad distributor cap.

rusted away, so before it fell down to the ground I gave it to a buddy and he
used the engine and tranny in another one.
Anways, Moving on:
Too low RPM, Too high of gear selected or lugging, Too low octane, Too
advanced ignition, ignition vacuum advance plugged to wrong carb port. Carb too
lean: Low fuel level, jets too small, bad accelerator pump, missing hoses...
