So owners manual says at 30k miles the hybrid needs oil change, CVT fluid
changed (transmission), air filters, tire rotation balance, and all the
inspection and what not. The local honda dealer says that'll run 360
dollars... which is a whee too much in my opinion. I think I gotta get the
oil changed/transmission fluid done there (stupid 0 grade oil), and probably
air filters as I can't find a place that stocks the parts. Umm, any
suggestions on how to cut this bill a bit?

 

Well first off I would ask for an itemized cost on how they come up
with $360. Usually a transmission drain will run $50, I estimate that
the air filter will run anywhere from $30-$50 and the oil change and
rotation will be about $20-30, so I'm not sure what else is being
charged but it seems like a lot. You may also want to opt to just get
the individual services done instead of the entire package. Dealers
like to "fluff" up what they do give you the impression that you are
getting a better deal with the package than the services separately.
For the air filter, if no automotive stores around you has it, you can
save about $20 by replacing it yourself by getting it from the dealer

Yeah, that did. I managed to get them to break it down to like:

30 - oil change
60 - transmission drain/refill
and I'm going to buy the air filters from them.

I'll probably get the tires rotated/balanced some where else, grand total
should run me under 130... which is way better than 350-360 the dealers were
trying to get.

Certain Walmarts have that 0 grade oil. I have seen it. If so, they also
do cheap oil changes. If you bring your own filter (and oil?) ,they do an
oil change for $10.

My car, not a Honda for now, has an oil filter no one can find, and they
have changed my oil for 130k miles with fewer screwups than most quickielube
places. Other 30k mile services are also probably competitive and competent
enough.

What's 0 grade oil? Is that engine oil? Is is specific to the hybrid?

I haven't done any hardcore hunting, but as far as I can tell its only
available through the Honda dealership.

Mobil 1 makes a 0W-20.

Not just that - Mobil probably makes Honda's 0W-20. My guess is that
it's the same thing. "Honda Motor Oil" sold in the US says that it's
made by Mobil right on the label, and comes in Mobil's proprietary
bottle shape.
