Civic 1989 hatchback (16 valve) engine RPM goes up by itself
Hi, my engine is the 16 valve/2 injectors and has been running good.
Recently it started to accelerate by itself!! Usually after its warmed
up a little.
It gets up to about 3000 RPM and stays there whitout me touching the
accelerator!! If I kill it at this point - it floods and can't start
after that for 15-20 min. It does it both on idle and while driving...
Goes up, stays at about 2500-3000 for a while and then goes down to
normal, then again...
Anyone had any similar problems? I tried to check the throttle
position switch - 700ohm closed to 3000 ohm open, intake manifold
temperature sensor - 1400ohm (cold). Where else should I look?
Thanks.

Vacuum leaks either through cracked hoses etc. or through a
malfunctioning fast-idle thermo valve. Many people suggest spraying a
fine mist of carb cleaner around the various places of the engine, but
carb cleaner can be hard on plastics. I have used rubbing alcohol, but
suspect plain water would do just as well. If your spray hits a spot
where there is a vacuum leak, the engine will slow down noticeably.
Don't know what your engine looks like, but you may be able to plug the
port for the fast-idle valve with your finger if you remove the air
intake boot. If that slows down the engine, the valve is probably bad.

kiko,
Check for coolant in rad and reservoir, also.
