What could cause Check engine light to come on when there are no
obvious mechanical problems?

Anything that I could do myself to reset the light to see if it comes
back on?

Your best option is to find "Auto Parts Stores" in the yellow pages and
ask if they will read the code for you (for free). Many of the Auto Parts
Stores now have this service. They should also tell you what the code
means. I can only guess that it may be something simple like the Oxygen
sensor. If there was a serious problem--your car would not be running as
well as it is presently running. They may also reset the light for you for
free.

Am I correct that if it is intermittent, that the light would have to be on
for them to determine the cause??

In my case I think that something happens for just a moment, but the light
will not go off until I turn the car off. Kind of a holding circuit of some
kind.

ecu should store the error code in its memory until its wiped

a 91 is not obd2 and the stores can't read them, pull the passengers
carpet back turn the key on and count the flashes on the ecu, they
will be long and short, likely a code 47 which will lead you to the
o2 sensor

My error ... I should have said that the light came on of itself and
stays on whenever ignition turned on and engine is running.

One suggestion was to just disconnect battery for 15 min. and then
reconnect to see if computer resets?? Something to do with gasoline
vapor vent??

Computers prior to OBD2 still stored fault codes and can be read out by
scanners. They also can usually be flashed out in the check engine light.
Autozone can probably scan it.
