catalytic converter life?
Hello,
My girlfriend took her 99 Accord to the Dealer because the "engine icon"
light was on and she said she smelled
something unusual about the car. The dealer wants to sell her a catalytic
converter for $600. plus. Please give me your
thoughts on this.

Re: catalytic converter life?
You need to see what the emissions equipment warranty was on that. At some point
it went to 100K miles. If that is true of her Accord, the cat will be a NC
replacement.

8years or 80k miles. and it's about right for that one to go.

Re: catalytic converter life?
Take it to any local muffler shop, they can replace it with a universal
hi-flow cat for about $125. You could buy an after market replacement for
about $150 and DIY.
Though the Engine light could be a bad O2 sensor.

i've seen a lot of those high flow cats still leace a DTC because
they don't do as good of a job as the factory unit. the ecu is
programmed to expect a certain drop in emissions, if it doesn't see
it, it turns on the CEL and goes into default mode.
