Accord tire replacement - recommendations?
I've just bought a 2000 Accord EX and want to replace the worn tires. In
order, my criteria for a new tire is (1) wet traction, (2) low road noise,
(3) smooth ride, (4) handling and (5) tread life. I've checked several web
sites like Tire Trac and have identified the Yokoham AVID Touring as meeting
or exceeding all criteria and for an incredibly low price. Has anyone had
experience with the tires, or have any other recommendations?
Also, I was wondering if there's any advantage to replacing the original
195/65-15 with a larger size tire, or if that's even possible with the size
rims on the car.
Thanks for any opinions.

Hello, I'm using Michelin's Harmony tires on my '01 Accord. I find them
quiet and their handling to be more than suitable for my requirements.

Hi,
If you install larger tire, odometer reading will be off.
Also it can interfere with your turning tire rubbing on the fneder
skirt. You can do anything you need/want as long as you what you're
doing. Chaning tire size is for performance or load carrying capacity.
Not counting all this, the larger ones will give better MPG.

The larger diameter tires won't give better fuel economy usually. The
engine has to work harder to turn the larger (see: heavier) tire, and
therefore your fuel economy will drop slightly.

OK
I have two Accords...a 97 wagon and an '02 Special Edition.
I just replaced the tires on the wagon with Continental Contixxxx paid 98
per....
They are awesome tires,. the '02 has Michelin which don't compare to the
Continental tires...

The answer to your question is the Bridgestone Potenza RE950...but do
your own research and look at the recent Consumer Reports 11/03 article.
The test car was a 6th generation Accord.

Re: Accord tire replacement - recommendations?
Generally you might want a wider tire for handling (or narrower tire for
snow).
Here is a tire size calculator:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
I use 195 60R15 on my 95 accord. Any change in tire size for that wheel
would result in at least a 1.5% change in odometer reading, so I don't think
I'll bother.
For your 195 65R15, a really close match in a wider tire is 215 55R15. This
would have 20 mm more tread width on the ground and only a 0.4% odometer
speed change. The only question is whether or not you can fit the 215 onto
your rim and will the wider tire (10 mm or 3/8" per side) hit anything in
the wheel well. You need to be sure you're not going to bump into any wheel
wells.
You can look and see how much clearance you have on your car now when you
crank the wheel over each way.
Maybe someone else here has some information on your rim capacity.
The Michelin hydroedges are rated pretty well. See:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ay.jsp?type=AS
The Potenza tire mentioned in another portion of this thread can be found in
the high performance all season section:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey....jsp?type=HPAS and
is rated pretty well. It will be less $$$ than the hydroedge, but you
probably won't get as many miles on it.

Re: Accord tire replacement - recommendations?
I put a set of AVID tourings on my 2000 EX V6 about a year ago. I
must say I am very impressed with their ride quality, rain and snow
handling and road noise. I must confess that I have yet to rotate them
(at almost 10K miles, but I will soon!!) but the tread so far shows no
noticable wear.
That being said, you will give up a little on performance when
compaired to the factory Michelins. But for me, the trade off for the
smoother ride was well worth it. They won't hold a corner like the
factory Michelins will, but the better handling in the rain and snow
(and believe you me, they HAVE seen snow!!) they are well worth the
price.
Is your EX a 4 banger? My V6 has 205/65 15's on them. I assumed the
sizes were the same between the 4 and the 6. In any case, I would not
recommend upsizing the tire; just go with what came from the factory
and you will have no troubles.
Please let me know if you have any questions...
