This is the 1.6 EX sedan. The light comes on, and either stays on
for a while and then goes off, or goes off again shortly. It seems to
have nothing to do at all with braking. In fact, it has yet to come on
*while* I'm braking. The brakes are working perfectly under normal
conditions at least. They were replaced a couple of years ago and have
seen little wear. I do garage the car for a week or two at a time, and
this started after the car had been garaged for a 2 weeks. What do the
techs here think? Bad sensor, loose connection, dashboard gremlins...?

 

No guarantee's, but my 94 was doing that due to pitted contact on ignition
switch. You can try moving the key position back or forward from normal run
position & see if this has any effect

The ABS system on this car is separate from the main brakes and normal
braking is unaffected by ABS faults.

Could be any or all the above. When is the last time you checked the
fluid level or changed the fluid in the ABS system (it is separate
from the main brakes)?

You can get a trouble code out of the ABS system by shorting the SCS
connector when an ABS fault is present and it will blink out the
code. This generation of ABS proved to be problem prone and expensive
to repair. The usual fault is in the main unit. You might get lucky
and simply have a loose or dirty sensor, but if it is the main unit,
it will probably cost as much as the car is worth to repair.

The good news is you can simply ignore it because the main brakes are
unaffected and remember to pump the brakes the old fashioned way if
you ever get into an emergency braking situation and the ABS fails to
respond.
