Re: ABS
My 96 it sometimes comes on, more often in cold weather. I took it to the
dealer last week and the condensor/reservoir is leaking... $1600. ABS ain't
that great!

The ABS light is a fault light. It comes on when the system detects a fault
and shuts itself down. When the light is on, you still have full normal
braking, but no anti-lock features (i.e. The brakes will lock up). There is
a way to get a trouble code out of the ABS system. If you have the Helms
manual, the procedure is in there. The problem is hardly ever anything
cheap.
It is probably worth your while to pull the code to see what is setting it
off, but you probably will not want to pay for the repair on a '94.

Re: ABS
Thanks for all the help. Curly, those links were very helpful. T. Nelson,
the light comes on at start-up, then goes off, then lights up after a few
seconds indicating a fault. I pulled the trouble codes using some
information provided by Curly's links and got a trouble code "1' . I haven't
followed it through the flow chart yet.
E. Meyer and Dan, Thanks for the input. You're right, it's not likely to be
cheap and if it doesn't prove economically feasible to repair I'll just
drive it with the ABS broke. Hopefully the light will burn out pretty soon
and I can forget about it.
Any other input or idas are still welcome.
Thanks

Thanks
Tim

Tim,
If the light comes on after you start driving, it's often one of the
wheel sensors. They get rusty, eaten by road salt, magnetized, or just
beat to heck over the years. If you can determine (for sure) which
sensor it is, just change it. Even by yourself. It could even just be
corrosion inside the connector, or the tone ring is so rusted that you
need to clean the tone ring with a wire brush and then the adjustment
needs to be moved tighter.
If the light comes on _before_ you even move the vehicle (usually after
hearing the ABS pump running three or four times), then it's the
modulator, or low on brake fluid in the ABS's reservior. now it may be
more expensive.
NEVER believe the dealer's expensive quote before you a few bucks worth
of research.
