99 Honda Civc "ping"
Hello:
I've recently noticed some pinging in my car at low RPM (less than 2000). I
don't hear anything at RPM above 3000. I checked all the plugs, plug wires,
timing and everything looks OK. I recently changed to BOSCH plugs instead
of NGK.
Anyone have any ideas on likely causes of pinging? Thanks.
PK

Well, you could replace those crappy Bosch plugs with new NGK's.

It is possible that the Bosch plugs have hotter hot spots than the NGKs
did. This is only a 50/50 thing, but since the symptoms showed up after
the change I would start by retracing my steps and putting plugs which
exactly match your prior NBKs.

PK,
I have a 99 Accord and I know for a fact that my 99 accord has a "knock
sensor". It's my guess that your car also has a knock sensor since it was
also built in 99. It might be defective--just guessing.
If you still have the old plugs--put them in to see if they solve the
problem. I doubt that the bosch plugs are the source of the problem unless
they are the wrong type plugs for your car.

Sounds like the new plugs are the wrong heat range for your engine. Plugs in
higher heat ranges reach farther into the combustion chamber and can get hot
enough to pre-ignite the fuel.

always use ngk plugs in your honda. they're the highest quality. get the
g-power platinum ones if you can or if you really can afford it get irridium
ones. and make sure you dont buy generic plug wires. ngk plug wires meet the
specs of honda also.

hondaman,
Great post and great advice. I have NGK plugs in my 99 Accord and they are
working great. I've seen several posts related to Bosch plugs. I don't
know
the reason--but they don't always work well in Honda cars. I don't know
how they
work in cars made by other companies. Several months ago, one of the
subscribers used Bosch Platinum plugs in his Honda and ended up having to
remove them due to the problems they caused--I hope that he was able to
get his money back since Platinum plugs are expensive.
