98 Civic EX Radio/Keyless Entry Question
Hello all!
Just picked up a 98 Civic EX 5spd. The car does not have a tape or CD
player. It only has the AM/FM. I was flipping through the owner's manual
and it says that the Keyless Entry system may not work with a non-Honda
radio. I intend to replace the radio with an aftermarket CD player.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
Thanks, in advance, for all your help! =)

Tera,
Wow! you _are_ new around here.
In the first paragraph you told us the YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, TRANNY TYPE,
and you confessed to READING THE MANUAL :-)
You ain't gonna fit in around here :-(
Seriously, why not just get a good used Honda AM/FM/CD/Cassette off
eBay? I've done that twice and been very happy. Maybe there's a catch,
like, are you in Pakistan or something ? ? ? (I don't think eBay is big
there)

Re: 98 Civic EX Radio/Keyless Entry Question
Tera,
The electronics for the keyless entry system is built into the factory
radio and that is why the keyless entry will not work with an
after-market radio. You could do as Curly suggested and get used Honda
stereo, making sure that it is one with the keyless remote receiver
built in. You would have to re-program it to work with your existing key
fobs.
Another option is to leave the factory stereo connected but hidden
behind the dash. Your after market stereo would sit where the factory
radio used to sit. Check
http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/Honda/Civic.html for installation
details.
A third option is to forgo the factory keyless entry and put in an
after-market one instead. http://www.partsexpress.com has a great $39.95
unit (part number 330-145). I have installed two of these units (one in
a Honda) and they work great. They only provide keyless entry, no alarm
functionality.
If memory serves me, the dome light signal also goes through the factory
stereo. That can be fixed by simply bridging to wires in the wire
harness.

Thanks Curly, I'll look into it. I wanted something a little "fancier" than
stock, though.
