Hi all,

I have a 98 4 door civic with automatic windows. Just recently my drivers
side window started taking a long time go shut (on its way up). Lately, i
had noticed it was much slower than usual to both open and shut the window.
Now, the window goes down, but refuses to go back up. After much ordeal, i
managed to bring the window up. It looks like the electric motor is bust or
something of that sort.

Has anyone run into such a situation? What is the most likely cause and is
it hard to repair on my own? I would like to shy away from taking it to the
dealer to avoid paying premium $$$.

Any advice would be helpful.

Make sure you don't have tree sap on the window
or the window gasket.

If you need to replace the motor, I suggest that you visit a large junk
yard and see if they can sell you a replacement motor from a wrecked
Civic. It will cost much less than a new motor from a Honda dealer.

First I'd try spraying silicone spray into the window tracks;that helped my
Integra that had a similar problem.

Yep, try the silicone spray first. After that, before you buy a new
motor, check out the window switch. My old Accord had the same problem
(slow window motion, eventually refused to come back up again) and it
turned out that the switch contacts were corroded. I took the switch
apart, cleaned the contacts and it started working again for about
another year untill I sold the car (it may still be working for all I know).

If the switch is the problem and you can't fix it, don't buy a used one,
it will likely develop the same problem soon.
