I have a 97 4cyl accord with automatic trans. The engine seems
to surge about 1000 rpm when it shifts. This seems to be worse when
the trans is cold. The car has 217,000 kilometers on it (134,000
miles). What could this problem be? It is clutch bands or sticking
valves? What would be a fix for this prob? Is the trans soon going to
die? (I suspect that). Help please.

According to your owner's manual, how far overdue are you to change your
tranny fluid? When it accumulates moisture, the problems will show up
really bad when it's below ZERO, celsius. Ice crystals don't lubricate
very well, nor do they pump thru small openings.

basically a car with a manual tranny will have it's rpm's surge if you dont
shift well (on the downshift) and that's perfectly normal....

unluckily auto trannys are much harder to troubleshoot... when did you last
change the transmission fluid? that could (if you're lucky) be a
poke-in-the-dark solution to your problem

is this happening to you on downshifting or upshifting?

I plan on replacing hte trans fluid. If that does not work, I will
also add some Lucas Trans Fluid Stabilizer. I hear that stuff is good.

I would imagine a surging problem to be engine related as opposed to
transmission related. But that is just off the top of my head
